Fully rebuilt F17 5-speed manual gearbox, commonly used in a wide range of Vauxhall, Opel, and GM small cars and vans. Ideal for petrol and diesel engines up to 1.8L. 1. Input shaft bearing failure (very common)

• Symptoms

  • Whining or humming noise in neutral

  • Noise changes when clutch is pressed

• Cause

  • Bearing wear due to age, poor lubrication, or high mileage

• Why it matters

  • If ignored, it can damage gears and the casing

2. Synchromesh wear (especially 2nd & 3rd gear)

• Symptoms

  • Crunching when changing gears

  • Hard or slow gear engagement

• Cause

  • Normal wear

  • Aggressive shifting

  • Old or incorrect gearbox oil

3. Differential bearing failure

• Symptoms

  • Rumbling or growling while driving

  • Noise increases with vehicle speed

• Cause

  • Bearing fatigue

  • Oil contamination or low oil level

• Risk

  • Can lead to catastrophic gearbox failure if it collapses

4. Oil leaks

• Common leak points

  • Driveshaft seals

  • Selector shaft seal

  • Gearbox casing joints

• Effect

  • Low oil level → overheating → bearing & gear damage

5. Gear selector mechanism wear

• Symptoms

  • Loose or vague gear lever

  • Difficulty selecting certain gears

• Cause

  • Worn selector forks or linkage components

• Often confused with

  • Clutch or external linkage problems

6. Gear tooth wear or chipping (less common)

• Symptoms

  • Knocking or clicking under load

  • Gear jumping out

• Cause

  • Long-term use with bad bearings
