1. Synchromesh Wear (Especially 1st/2nd)
-
One of the most frequently seen internal faults is wear on the synchromesh rings, particularly for 1st and 2nd gears.
-
This wear can make selecting these gears notchy, difficult or noisy, often with grinding or crunching when shifting if the synchroniser no longer engages properly.
2. Difficulty Engaging Reverse or Forward Gears
-
Many owners report hard or grinding engagement into reverse, and in some cases 1st gear too — particularly when cold or if the clutch isn’t fully disengaging.
-
This can sometimes be clutch-related, but repeated issues suggest transmission selector or synchroniser wear.
3. Clutch/Engagement Issues
-
Although not unique to the transmission itself, worn clutch components, sticky input shaft splines or improper clutch disengagement often mimic gearbox faults (e.g., hard shifting or failure to engage gears).
-
It’s common for clutch wear to mask as gearbox trouble, especially on models with high mileage.
4. Shift Linkage/Pivot Shaft Corrosion
-
Some users report a sticky or stiff gear shift linkage, caused by water ingress and corrosion of the selector pivot shaft inside the gearbox, leading to stiff or resistant gear changes.
-
Regular lubrication and fitting protective seals can help reduce this problem.
5. Gearbox Bearings & Internal Damage (Less Common but Real)
-
While not as widespread as synchromesh wear, bearing and gear issues inside the IB5 do occur — causing rumbling noises, vibration or accelerated wear.
-
In forum reports, higher loads or aggressive driving have been linked to eventual internal failures on some boxes.
6. Oil Seal Leakage
-
Although less dramatic than internal faults, oil seal leaks can occur around the IB5. If unnoticed, oil loss can accelerate internal wear and shift problems.
