1. Bearing Wear & Failure (Most Common)
Output Shaft / 5th–6th Gear Bearing
-
The most notorious fault on M32 gearboxes is the bearing that supports the 5th/6th gear/output shaft.
-
When this bearing wears or fails, the gearbox often makes a distinct whining, rumbling, or humming noise — especially noticeable in 5th and 6th gear and sometimes in other gears too.
2. Gear Engagement / Gear Wear Issues
Gear Teeth + Synchromesh Wear
-
Some M32 gearboxes develop crunching noise, rough selection or gears popping out — especially in gears like 2nd, 3rd and 4th.
-
Gearteeth wear and hub/synchro issues can eventually lead to loss of gear engagement if teeth edges become too worn.
3. Selector Linkage / Gearstick Feel
-
Some drivers notice sloppy, stiff or vague gear selection that feels like the gearbox isn’t engaging precisely. This is often due to linkage/cable wear rather than an internal gearbox failure.
4. Oil / Heat & Lubrication Issues
-
M32 gearboxes are sensitive to heat and benefit from good quality and fresh gearbox oil. Poor or very old oil increases internal wear and bearing stress.
-
Some owners choose to increase oil capacity slightly (especially on Gen1 units) or use high-grade oil to reduce long-term wear.
