1. Synchromesh Wear / Gear Engagement Problems

  • 1st and 2nd gear synchromesh failures are quoted as perhaps the most frequently discussed fault on MX65 gearboxes, especially on heavier vehicles like the Focus. When these synchronisers wear out or break, shifting into 1st or 2nd can become difficult, noisy, or nearly impossible without grinding

2. Gear Shifter Feel & Linkage Wear

Many owners describe the MX65’s gear lever as having a “sloppy” or loose feel, compared with older Ford manuals (like the B6 or IB5). This is partly a design characteristic but plastic bushings/parts can wear, making it feel vague or imprecise.

This can present as:

  • Play in the gearstick

  • Notchy or vague gate feel

  • Gradual worsening over time

3. Torque & Load Limitations

The MX65 gearboxes (including the 6‑speed unit) were designed for a maximum torque capacity around ~215 Nm — appropriate for smaller petrol engines but not significantly over‑engineered.
This means:

  • Heavy use or unexpected torque spikes (e.g., mild hybrid boosts) can accelerate wear, especially on synchronisers.

  • Overboost torque figures on some engines can exceed the MX65’s original design capacity, contributing to wear in real‑world use.
