 1. Difficulty selecting or engaging gears

  • Users often report hard or stiff gear changes, especially when cold. This can be due to sticky shift linkages or seized pivot parts in the selector mechanism rather than internal gears.

  • In some cases 5th gear or others don’t engage well — often linked to linkage adjustment/wear rather than internal failure.

 2. Clutch / release mechanism wear affecting shifting

  • A technical service bulletin notes that wear in the clutch release pivot/arm and bushings on BE type gearboxes can cause difficulty selecting gears or failure to engage properly, even though the underlying gearbox can be fine.

 3. Linkage and selector components wear

  • The external linkage rods, pivot points or plastic linkage parts can become worn or seize, causing sloppy, hard, or imprecise gear selection.

  • Some owners mention internal steel springs or selector parts breaking leading to poor shift feel or inability to select gear.

4. Gearbox oil issues

  • Low gearbox oil due to input/output shaft seal leaks or joint leaks can cause poor lubrication. Loss of oil accelerates wear, rough shifting, and noise (early wear of bearings or synchros). Many owners emphasise checking oil level regularly.

 5. Bearing wear / noise

  • Worn bearings inside the gearbox can produce humming, whining or rumbling noises, especially noticeable when revving or in neutral. While not specific only to BE4, this symptom of internal wear is frequently reported on PSA gearboxes.

 6. Synchroniser wear / grinding

  • Like many manual boxes, the BE4 can develop synchroniser wear over time, leading to grinding when shifting into certain gears — especially if the clutch doesn’t fully disengage or oil level/quality is poor.

 7. Gears jumping out / poor gear retention

  • Users report gears that seem to pop out under acceleration or don’t stay fully engaged, which can sometimes be caused by selector issues or worn internal engagement dogs/synchronisers.
